What is closed?

Interstate 84 WESTBOUND is closed between Exit 216 (six miles east of Pendleton) and La Grande Exit 265. This webpage is specifically for WESTBOUND travel. (For status of EASTBOUND freeway or other highway sections in the area check the TripCheck home page for road/weather alerts.

Why is the freeway closed?

The freeway is closed due to a crash that is blocking both WESTBOUND travel lanes and/or a weather event that is making travel extremely hazardous (slick roads, heavy fog, smoke, etc.). The TripCheck alert may identify information regarding reason for closure and/or location of crash. Closures due to weather events are put in place to help protect the safety of travelers. The freeway will be open when it is deemed safe for travel.

What is open to local traffic only?

Only the short section of westbound freeway between Exit 259 (west La Grande/U.S. 30 Interchange) and Exit 252 (Hilgard State Park/OR 244 Interchange) is open for local residents so they may travel to their homes. Local resident (no commercial trucks) can show proof of residency (photo ID) at the ODOT Check Point located along U.S. 30 near Gangloff Park (see map above). Local traffic for this detour option consists of Perry, Hilgard, Starkey or Ukiah residents only. These communities are located along the I-84 freeway section between exits 259 and 252, or along OR 244, which is accessed from the freeway at Exit 252.

Why are some residence allowed past the closure?

The WESTBOUND freeway is closed at Exit 265 to ensure that travelers heading towards Pendelton (and beyond) can exit the freeway in La Grande at a location where services (gas, food, lodging) are available. ODOT does not want travelers to become stranded on the freeway in areas that are away from these services. Provided the WESTBOUND freeway section between exits 259 and 252 is safe for travel, ODOT also does not want to prevent local residents from traveling home to the local communities identified above.

Are trucks allowed on the detour?

Truck drivers of small delivery vehicles who are residents of the local communities identified above may be allowed on the closed freeway section to get to their homes. In some cases small delivery trucks with legitimate / certifiable deliveries to listed local communities may be allowed on closed freeway sections. Drivers will need to show bill of lading or other documents to verify deliveries are scheduled to local communities. Note: the access road to the ODOT check point on U.S. 30 near Exit 259 is not suitable for large commercial vehicles and there are no places for large vehicles to turn around.
