What is closed to all traffic?

Interstate 84 WESTBOUND is closed between Exit 216 (six miles east of Pendleton) and La Grande Exit 265. This webpage is specifically for WESTBOUND travel. (For status of EASTBOUND freeway or other highway sections in the area check the TripCheck home page for road/weather alerts.

Why is the freeway closed?

The freeway is closed due to a crash that is blocking both WESTBOUND travel lanes and/or a weather event that is making travel extremely hazardous (slick roads, heavy fog, smoke, etc.) somewhere between La Grande and Pendleton. The TripCheck alert may identify information regarding reason for closure and/or location of crash. Closures due to weather events are put in place to help protect the safety of travelers. The freeway will be open when it is deemed safe for travel.

What is open to passenger vehicles only (closed to trucks)?

The Westbound freeway between Ontario at Exit 374 and La Grande at Exit 265 is open to passenger vehicles only (no commercial trucks).

NOTE: Travelers in passenger vehicles are advised to verify motel accommodations prior to travel if planning to find lodging in La Grande. During extended closures lodging may be booked full.

Why is part of the freeway only open to passenger vehicles, but not trucks?

The WESTBOUND freeway is closed at Exit 265 in La Grande to all traffic due to crash or extreme weather conditions between La Grande and Pendleton. Because the Westbound freeway closure has continued for several hours (extended closure) truck traffic stranded in La Grande and Baker City have filled the truck stops and adjacent highway shoulders. Due to limited truck parking space there is no more room for trucks to safely park in these communities. The Westbound freeway between Ontario and La Grande will remain closed to commercial trucks until the freeway is open between La Grande and Pendleton and backed up traffic has cleared out of La Grande and Baker City.
